Tour Highlights

  • Empty-handed, beginners welcome – Half-day plan with pick-up from Sapporo Station
  • The rental fee for fishing rods and other equipment needed for smelt fishing, such as fishing rods and reels, is included
  • Stay comfortable inside the tent, protected from the wind and snow
This plan includes pick-up from Sapporo Station and pick-up from Barato River, the smelt fishing location. The smelt fishing is done in the Barato River, located on the border between Ishikari City and the northern part of Sapporo City. It is about 30 minutes by car from Sapporo Station.
 
The trip takes about 3.5 hours from meeting at Sapporo Station to disbanding at Sapporo Station.
Come empty-handed! Winter clothes and boots rentals available! The rental fee for fishing rods, reels, and other equipment needed for smelt fishing is included in the basic fee.
 
The Barato River is a meandering river located near the river mouth, and in winter the river freezes over.  Comfortable inside the tent, protected from wind and snow, you will fish from a hole drilled into the ice for wakasagi, or smelt. On sunny days, you can also fish outside.
 
Then, the smelt you catch will be fried into tempura!
 
Why not spend some fun time in a tent specially designed for smelt fishing on a completely frozen river? Even if you are new to fishing, your guide will teach you how to use the fishing rod and how to attach bait, so you can enjoy the experience with peace of mind. The smelt you catch swimming in the clear water will be fried on the spot. They are delicious when freshly fried.

The smelt fishing location is the Ibarato River, which flows between Sapporo and Ishikari, 30 to 40 minutes by car from Sapporo Station. You can ice fish by drilling a hole in the frozen river, or even inside a tent. You can experience it empty-handed- the tour fee includes the rental of fishing rods, bait, buckets, chairs, and other equipment needed for smelt fishing.
