Smelt fishing is a seasonal winter activity at Lake Abashiri. It would be a shame to go home without trying some smelt fishing!

Tour Company

We opened our base facility, Connectrip, on the auspicious day of July 8th, 2019 (Reiwa 1). Our aim is to create a new way of traveling. We want every trip we make to connect Abashiri, located within a quasi-national park, to the people who support the local industries in the surrounding areas, the current state of the evolving industries, the history, folklore, and tourist destinations of the region, and our guests.

  • Empty-handed fishing for wild wakasagi (Japanese smelt)

I participated with four friends. The fishing spot tent and fishing rods were all set up, and the staff stationed in the tent even took care of baiting and removing the smelt from the hooks, so we were able to concentrate on fishing and had an amazing catch. We also had the experience of drilling a hole outside the tent and fishing through that hole, so we enjoyed fishing in a different environment than inside the tent. Drilling the hole was harder than we thought, but all the participants enjoyed it. The smelt we caught were also immediately fried in tempura, which was surprisingly delicious, which was impressive. I recommend this as an activity to do in Abashiri in the winter.   (This review has been machine translated into English)
