There is a hidden treasure trove of fly fishing in northern Hokkaido! On this tour, join a local fishing guide to practice catch and release fishing on the famous Shokotsu River for the Dolly Varden trout, a fish unique to Hokkaido.
Fly fishing is a type of fishing that mainly targets trout. In order to deliver the light fly by floating it on the surface of the water to where the fish are, a special heavy thread called a fly line is used like a whip to cast the fly. This technique, fly casting, is said to be a barrier and makes it difficult for beginners to try this type of fishing.
With your guide, you will learn how to fish in a method that will help you get over this initial difficulty! You will have three experiences- making your own flies, learning to cast, and then the real fishing experience. Each tour is private, so you will leave fulfilled!
Join a local guide who used to be a science teacher to on an outdoor walk. This is a perfect trip for stopovers while visiting the northern part of Hokkaido! Come join this trip with many chances to get up close to the wildlife and beauty of eastern Hokkaido. You will also get a tea break with local teas and handmade treats as well!

7:45- Meet in front of Hotel Keikoku for a briefing before the fishing trip.
8:00- Move to the fly tying venue. Follow in your car or ride in the guide’s car. We will create an elk hair caddis, a classic dry fly.
9:00- Move outside to learn fly casting. Use a fly rod and fly reel and practice casting.
10:00- Move to the river system for the actual fishing experience. Move upstream and try to catch Dolly Varden trout, which is easy even for beginners. We will start with a lecture at a location where it is easy to cast.
11:30- Return to start point and finish.

Notes
- If the tour cannot proceed due to heavy rain, lightning, wind, or blizzard, we will cancel the tour and inform you.
- The tour may be cancelled midway for safety or other reasons at the discretion of the guide.
- Encounters with wildlife are not 100% guaranteed.
- You are responsible for your children.
- Please follow all of the instructions of the tour guide, as there are risks in outdoor tours. Please also understand that the guide cannot be held personally responsible for any accidents caused by the customer’s intentional or negligent acts.
- You will be entering brown bear territory. The guides will take the utmost care, but we also ask that you bring along noisemakers, bear spray, and other protective gear.
- Wear a lifejacket is mandatory.
Cancellation / Changes
- A cancellation fee of 100% is charged if cancelled after the start of the event or in case of a no-show
- A cancellation fee of 50% is charged if cancelled on the day of, before the start of the event
- A cancellation fee of 40% is charged if cancelled 1 day or less before the event
- A cancellation fee of 30% is charged if cancelled 7 days or less before the event
- A cancellation fee of 20% is charged if cancelled 10 days or less before the event
