The All Hokkaido staff loves to travel all over Hokkaido- and we want you to see where we’re going and what’s going on! Maybe you will find some inspiration for your trip here. This time Jordan and Manami go to the Japan National Sweets Expo, held in Asahikawa in 2025!

Hokkaido is known throughout Japan for its incredible produce. That is one of the big reasons that Asahikawa, famous for its rice, water, and other ingredients necessary for sweets, was chosen to host this year’s Japan National Confectionary Expo!

Beginning in 1911, what was originally called the Imperial Confectionery and Candy Fair is a delightful tradition in Japan, kicking off in Tokyo and traveling around the country roughly every four years. It’s much more than just a fair; it’s a true confectionery festival where Japan’s finest sweet makers gather to show off their incredible creations. From classic wagashi (Japanese sweets) to modern treats and regional specialties, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see (and taste!) the best of Japanese sweets and appreciate the artistry and culture behind them.

Hokkaido Asahikawa Confectionery Expo 2025, named this year Smile Sweets Hokkaido, was something that Jordan and Manami could not miss out on, so off they went!

After arriving, they were shocked at how many people were there, even on a Tuesday morning! Sweets and snacks are serious business in Japan, and there was a considerable crowd even on this weekday. They started by looking at the exhibits and displays made by confectioners across Japan, and were totally stunned at how amazing and detailed they were! Even looking up close, it was hard to believe that they were all truly edible and made from food- from delicate birds to intricate buildings and blown glass-like sugar sculptures, everyone visiting was completely wowed by the skills of the artisans visiting from across Japan.

Next was time for sweets tasting. With a lot of booths available outside from various candy and sweets-makers across Japan, Manami was adventurous with corn ice cream, and Jordan went traditional but luxurious with taiyaki on top of rich Hokkaido ice cream. Although most shops had lines, they were well-worth the wait in the end as they both filled up on sweet treats! After exploring the exhibits and sampling the great selection of foods, it was time for the final boss- the market itself, featuring shops and treats from all over Japan! Although it was crowded, Manami and Jordan both managed to get some exclusive treats before starting their trip back to Sapporo.

Exclusive and interesting events are happening all over Hokkaido throughout the year! Though it can be intimidating and confusing to try to arrange for tickets and visits, we are more than happy to help you plan your trip! Feel free to send us an email or a message through the inquiry form!
