If you’re looking for a destination that captures the romantic, “old-world” soul of Hokkaido, look no further than Otaru. Known for its iconic canal, Victorian-style streetlamps, and world-class glasswork, Otaru feels like a beautifully preserved film set. Whether you are a history buff, a foodie, or simply seeking a scenic day trip, this charming harbor city is a must-visit.

The History of Otaru: From Herring Gold Rush to “Wall Street of the North”

Otaru’s history is inextricably linked to the sea. In the late 1800s, the city flourished during the herring “Gold Rush.” The massive wealth generated from fishing led to the construction of opulent “Herring Mansions” (Nishin Goten) and the famous stone-fronted warehouses you see along the canals and streets today.

By the early 1900s, Otaru had evolved into Hokkaido’s premier commercial hub, earning the nickname the “Wall Street of the North.” Major banks and shipping companies established grand, Western-style headquarters here, many of which still stand as National Important Cultural Properties. While the focus has shifted from finance to tourism, the city’s old-timey atmosphere remains its greatest treasure.
