    Tour Highlights

    • Visit a natural beech forest, one of Japan’s representative deciduous broadleaf trees
    • Experience beauty in every season
    • Designated as a national natural monument, take a walk through the Utasai beech forest with a local nature guide

Enjoy the beech forest in each of the four seasons in Kuromatsunai Town, the northernmost beech village in Japan. Take a walk with a nature guide through the Utasai beech forest, a designated national natural monument that has overcome two different threats of logging. There are two different course lengths to suit your time and interest.

In spring, take a walk while looking at the pretty spring ephemeral flowers and the new green young beech leaf buds.
In summer, you can feel the energy of nature in the deep green.
In autumn, you can encounter the beech forest shining in gold.

    [Spring]
The beech leaf buds usually sprout around May 10th. The newly opened young leaves are a transparent light green. Enjoy the spring beech forest, which feels like walking under green stained glass.

    [Summer]
In summer, the new green changes to deep green. The lush leaves block the strong sunlight, and the sunlight occasionally shines through. With the added benefit of evaporation from the ground, you can enjoy a cool and comfortable forest bathing experience.

    [Autumn]
The beech forest is in its most colorful season of the year. The end of October is the best time to visit.
The green leaves that protected us from the summer sun turn yellow, and the surrounding trees also dress up in red and yellow. The ground, covered with piles of fallen leaves, feels soft and fluffy with every step.

Why not enjoy the beech forests of Kuromatsunai Town, the northernmost beech forest village? The beech forests, which represent Japan's deciduous broadleaf trees, are beautiful in every season, so you'll never get bored no matter how many times you visit.

    Tour Company

The northernmost beech trees are the town's treasure! The beech trees that make up the temperate forests are found at their northernmost location in Japan, with Kuromatsunai being known as the "northernmost beech village." The town's beech forests, including the Utasai beech forest, a designated national natural monument, have continued to irrigate the earth as a "green dam" and return its blessings to the local area. We support experiential tours that use the northernmost beech forest, which has been protected from countless threats of logging, and the people who live there as a tourist resource.

    • Beech Forest Walk

I participated with four friends. Unfortunately it was raining, but we were able to borrow rain boots, which was a relief. Because it was raining, we were able to see rainwater running down the beech trunks up close, which was impressive. Our guide was studying mushrooms, so in addition to explaining about beech trees, we also walked around looking for mushrooms, which was a lot of fun. We all laughed as we talked because we were all from the mainland. We also participated as a group of two people who had moved to Hokkaido because they were interested in farming, and two young people who want to become farmers in the future, so we felt a strong sense of affinity when we found out that our guide was a new farmer from the mainland. Thank you for your careful guide in the rain. I would like to walk through the beech forest again on a nice day next time.   (This review has been machine translated)
