The swans stay here from mid-October to early April.
In winter, Lake Mashu is much more beautiful than in summer, with the Mashu blue color becoming clearer.
Enjoy the winter scenery as you stroll along the shore of the second clearest lake in the world after Lake Baikal!
If you walk a little closer, the swans will come up to you on their own, so don't miss your chance to take a picture!
Made from aluminum, they are stronger and lighter than the traditional Japanese snowshoes, making them very easy to walk in and preventing your feet from getting tired.
You can easily make snowballs with the snowball maker.
When you go snowshoeing to places where no one has stepped, you will find lots of animal footprints.
Don't get so caught up in bird watching that you forget your snowshoes.
Let's walk slowly on the fresh snow without straining ourselves!
Children aged 3 and over who are too old to wear snowshoes can enjoy a sledding experience.

Come enjoy the incredible winter of Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo by snowshoeing with a local guide! It’s okay even if it’s your first time snowshoeing! Your guide will give you a detailed lesson on how to put on snowshoes and walk in them.
Even beginners and those who are not physically fit can feel at ease!
From the elderly to children, everyone can enjoy playing in the snow and the winter scenery at their own pace without forcing themselves to walk over tough terrain.

From Mashu Station, take Route 52 and head north for about 15-20 minutes to Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck. Parking and toilets are available.
What to Bring & Wear
- Cold weather gear- warm and easy-to-move-in clothes
- Snowwear tops and bottoms, light down jacket, or similar wear
- Cold weather gloves are a must. Ski or snowboard gloves are also acceptable.
- Waterproof trekking shoes, boots, or snow boots with thick socks.
- Knit hat
- Sunglasses or snow goggles

- Itinerary
- Start by getting ready at the Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck
- Head towards the No. 3 Observation Deck and walk around the outer rim of Lake Mashu
- Arrive at a viewpoint that can’t be seen from the Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck
- Take a break (hot drinks provided)
- Sledding on the slopes and playing in the snow
- Take a different route to return to Lake Mashu No. 1
- Head to the Lake Kussharo Sand Bath
- Put on snowshoes and head north from Sand Bath Rest House
- Observe the “Omiwatari”
- End of tour and disband

Notes
- People with physical disabilities, people who have difficulty walking, pregnant women, people who have consumed alcohol, people who are at risk of unexpected seizures, and people with health concerns may be asked to refrain from participating, so please be sure to let us know when making your reservation.
- If the tour cannot proceed due to heavy rain, lightning, wind, or blizzard, we will cancel the tour and inform you.
- Please follow all of the instructions of the tour guide, as there are risks in outdoor tours. Please also understand that the guide cannot be held personally responsible for any accidents caused by the customer’s intentional or negligent acts.
- The guide will carefully lecture you on how to put on snowshoes and dangerous areas around Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo, but since it is you who will actually be walking, please be careful not to get distracted by the scenery and injure yourself.
Cancellation / Changes
- A cancellation fee of 100% is charged if cancelled on the day of the event or in case of a no-show
- A cancellation fee of 50% is charged if cancelled 3 days or less before the event
