Experience making an Ainu deer whistle “Ipapukeni” and hear stories about deer, forests and mountains near Sapporo

Tour Highlights

• Make a deer whistle in the style that the indigenous Ainu of Hokkaido actually used to call deer
• The tour will be held outdoors under a roof in an orchard, so there is no need to worry about crowding and just enjoy the outdoors
• You can ask the instructor any questions you like!

We will invite Ainu Pompe Ishii, a former staff member of Sapporo Pirka Kotan, as our instructor and make a deer whistle together. Hear stories from him about the forests and mountains, deer and bears.

Deer whistles are a tool often used by Ainu people when hunting deer.
They make a sound similar to the cry of a female deer to lure male deer.
Normally they are carved out of wood, but this time we will prepare a wooden mold and drill holes so that parents and children can participate together- even small children can make them.

Carefully paste birch bark, vinyl, tissue paper, etc. to make the whistle resonate and make a sound. Then take home the deer whistle you made!

Instructor Ishii will also bring toys used by the Ainu people in the past. Let’s try playing the games that the Ainu played!
