Smelt fishing involves drilling a round hole in a frozen lake in winter, dropping a fishing line, and catching smelt under the ice. Even if you’ve always wanted to try it, the preparations are a lot of work, and it’s cold…
For those of you who are looking for something like this, we recommend this warm and comfortable ice smelt fishing tour at Lake Kanayama in Minamifurano, about an hour’s leisurely drive from Furano or Tomamu.
No prior preparations such as drilling holes are required, so you can start fishing immediately after arrival and even sample freshly caught, deep-fried smelt. As this is a guided tour, even first-timers will have plenty of fun!
In addition to the traditional ice smelt fishing tour,
we have also taken measures to protect you from the cold, such as providing a warm rest area, heated tents, and warm boots with hand warmers, so it is comfortable for all people who are sensitive to the cold.

I caught a lot!
With my family. At first, we didn't catch anything and were a little disappointed, but we quickly changed locations. Then, we started catching fish like crazy. The guide was very kind and explained everything carefully, and we had a blast. We even caught a huge smelt, a whopping 20cm. The tempura we ate after fishing were incredibly delicious, and I highly recommend them to everyone.
