Head out on a great hike of the active lava dome Mt. Tarumae, an incredible category A volcano nestled next to Lake Shikotsu! Walk through lush woodlands up to the stark volcanic slopes. As you climb you will see panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Shikotsu, culminating in the lava dome itself!
Despite its modest 1,022m elevation, the mountain boasts a vibrant array of alpine flora. Traverse the ridgeline, witnessing firsthand the steaming fumaroles and the raw beauty of this iconic Hokkaido landscape. Enjoy a mid-hike break for a moment to savor the volcanic spectacle, completing a truly unforgettable exploration of Japan’s dynamic geology.
This hike is around 3-4 hours, and suitable for moderate hikers!

8:30-9:00: Pick-up, free from Noboribetsu and Noboribetsu Onsen
9:00-10:00: Drive to the trailhead
10:00-11:00: Hike
11:00-13:00: Hike around the caldera, then stop for lunch
13:00-13:30: Have lunch with great views of the beautiful mountains!
13:30-15:30: Finish circling the caldera and return to the start point
15:30-16:30: Drive back to Noboribetsu and finish tour
