Join an early morning expedition to Hokkaido Shrine with the Sapporo Explorers- living in Sapporo, the Explorer for your tour will be your companion around the city and help you to enjoy the town like a local.
Begin your day with a unique cultural immersion! Meet your Explorer bright and early at the entrance of Maruyama Park. From there, you’ll be guided through the tranquil park to the serene grounds of Hokkaido Shrine. Here, you’ll have the special opportunity to join a local radio “taiso” group for their invigorating morning exercise.
Radio taiso, or radio calisthenics, is a cherished Japanese tradition of group exercises, often used as a warm-up, dating back to the 1920s. Across Japan, these groups gather every morning to participate in these easy-to-follow routines, offering a delightful and unique way to start the day with some movement!
After your refreshing exercise session, take your time to explore the peaceful atmosphere of Hokkaido Shrine and learn about its rich history. Finally, your Explorer will lead you to a hidden gem – a local bakery – where you can enjoy a light and delicious breakfast to complete your morning experience.

- 6:15: Meet your Sapporo Explorer and head to Hokkaido Shrine. Your guide will meet you at the entrance to Maruyama Koen, and from there you will take the path up to the main grounds of the shrine.
- 6:30-6:45: Join the radio taiso exercise. It is easy to follow the movements, and welcoming to beginners- leaders of the radio taiso group will stand on the steps of the shrine for you to see.
- 6:45-7:00: When you finish your morning calisthenics, take some time to meet members of the radio taiso group! They are eager to welcome you into their morning routine, and would love to talk with you about the history of Hokkaido and Hokkaido Shrine, as well as their group!
- 7:00-7:20: After finishing radio taiso, explore the quiet Hokkaido Shrine with your Explorer. They will tell you the history of Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine.
See the shrine without the crowds! It has a special atmosphere.

- 7:20-7:45: When finished, walk through the park to a local secret bakery.
We will prepare freshly baked croissants, but if you’re still feeling hungry follow it up with some more of this locally made delicious bread!
- 7:45-8:15: Enjoy fresh baked bread and coffee outside the bakery, or bring it back to Maruyama Park to enjoy your breakfast surrounded by the greenery.
- 8:15: When finished, your Explorer will lead you back to the entrance of Maruyama Park. Enjoy the rest of your day after this morning adventure!
